Super low baby production in Malaysia… Oh dear

Every time someone talks about new babies, we come to the topic of oh dear, the Chinese population here in Malaysia is dropping. Erm… of course we are but truth is, the live birth rate continues to drop for Malaysia as a nation. By the way, when the increase in population kept dropping of course the demand for goods and services in the future would be lower yeah.

In other words, even if we like to do business, there may be fewer customers in the future! Fewer people going to universities meant some universities have to close down. Okay, perhaps Artificial Intelligence can help tremendously in the working world? Does this mean we are working towards extinction then? If population kept becoming smaller in the future year after year? Now for some stats first.

Article in nst.com.my. The country’s live birth rate decreased by 10.2 per cent to 100,732 in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 112,197 births in the same period last year, according to the Demographic Statistics released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said male babies outnumbered females at 51,759 to 48,973 births.

“On average, one baby was born every minute, 47 babies every hour, and 1,119 babies a day in the second quarter of 2024,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Uzir said mothers aged between 30 and 39 years accounted for the highest number of live births, at 51,740 or 51.4 per cent in the second quarter of this year, followed by mothers aged 20-29 at 41.5 per cent, those aged 40 and above (5.4 per cent) and mothers under 20 years (1.8 per cent). Incentives for new babies?

I think this will not be easy because many nations are doing that and they are not doing that well. For example, South Korea and Singapore. Both offered good incentives for new babies too because of their concern on the population growth.

Here’s that latest article on South Korea. Scare really. Read here: Population Dropping by 50,000 every year!

When mindsets are set, then it’s hard to change. The mindset of quality over quantity lah. So, unless and until we change this, we will be fighting a losing battle. However some countries are trying to boost this via emigration. Australia for example is always open to talents with skills they do not have which will help the nation. USA for example with their green card program. Here’s one latest news about green card too. You may be surprised with some of the countries in the list too:

So, get set for this to continue happening. I do not think it will impact us much this generation but probably 15-20 years down the road, we will see a lot of changes to how the economy will become. Very interesting time indeed.
