Property Investment 101: When 400,000 people travel between two places DAILY
I was one of the hundreds of thousands who travel between SG – JB
I once tried to cross from Singapore back to Johor Bahru in the evening. I expected it to take an hour and a half at most. It took me over 2 hours. Point to point. It was not during a holiday. There was walking. There were many people everywhere. During public holidays, this can increase further because going overseas is something everyone loves, not just Malaysians but also Singaporeans. This is to tell you that unless it’s truly necessary, not many people would want to spend hours just to travel from SG to JB.
If the journey is 30 minutes, decision is easy. If it’s 2 hours, then the decision is usually no unless necessary. Do we know how many people travel daily between JB – SG? Briefly, it is estimated that by end of 2023, 136 million people would cross through SG – JB and that’s around 373,000 people daily.
Article in malaymail.com Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the number of travelers entering the country on the Malaysia-Singapore land route is expected to increase at a rate of 15 per cent a year.
He said, “It is estimated that 157 million travelers will pass through the two land border entrances at the Johor Causeway here and the Second Link Crossing at Iskandar Puteri by 2025.”
He added that the number of people who travelled through both land crossings totalled 71 million last year, based on official data taken after Malaysia fully reopened its land borders on April 1, 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fadillah said the number of travelers at the two land border crossings had reached a total of 98 million people as of last month.
He pointed out that this figure is expected to continue to increase to around 136 million by the end of this year, returning to pre-Covid 19 numbers in 2019. Article in malaymail.com
Why the 400,000 average per day will increase?
Let’s remind ourselves that in Singapore, there are a lot of attractions for foreign visitors to visit but to a Singaporean who’s 35 years old, he / she would have been to all these attractions before and would have easily completed them within years and may have repeated some of them too. This is why people travel overseas even if that overseas is just from Singapore to Johor, Malaysia. Well, if only the High Speed Rail (HSR) was not shelved, then in 3 years (2026), Singaporeans without a car would be able to travel to many more places beyond just Johor. Today, Singaporeans without a car can use GRAB when they are in JB. This is why if things become easier, faster and better to travel between Singapore and JB, then this average number will easily increase.
