Johor-Singapore RTS Link Trials to Start Soon. Property catalyst?

Johor-Singapore RTS Link Trials to Start Soon. Property catalyst?

Some details about RTS and its potential economic impact

Did you know that the Johor – Singapore RTS Link’s maximum capacity is 10,000 passengers per direction per hour. (I already consider this very low…) Considering the peak hours, probably it will carry 40,000 passengers daily. Note that these 40,000 passengers would most probably be going into SG from JB on a daily basis. Staying in JB and working in SG. Pay rents in RM and salary in S$. Financially savvy combination, right?

Cannot do so now because one would have to wake up at 5am daily in order to do the same thing and then come back only at 9pm to JB. What a tiring life… With RTS, it would be just be within 30 minutes. Maybe the most important thing would be whether it’s on track for completion by end of 2026? That’s just merely 1 year later. Let’s take a look at its progress thus far

Source: paultan.org “The first phase of trials for Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link train project is expected to begin in December without passengers, said transport minister Anthony Loke, reported Bernama. The RTS trains are expected to arrive at the Wadi Hana depot by the middle of this month, Loke said.

“In the next two weeks, the first train will be sent and taken to the depot. If we go according to the schedule, many will get to see the train in motion in December during the first phase of trials. However, the trains won’t be open to the public yet because there are some important processes that need to be followed, including system integration and safety tests, before full operation can begin,” said the transport minister.

Set to connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North in Singapore, the RTS Link is still targeted for completion by December 31, 2026, to become fully operational by January 2027, according to Loke..” Source: paultan.org

Potential economic impact?

Maybe for weekends, it could be more than 40,000 on weekdays if Singaporeans would like to visit another country versus just staying within the same island every weekend for the whole year. I know there are a lot of things to see and do in Singapore. However, one weekend out of 52 weeks can definitely be spent overseas… and this overseas is a mere RTS ride away.

Let’s wish just 1% of Singapore coming to spend some of their money in JB every weekend? 1 percent out of 6.11 million is around 60,000 per weekend. This is a very good and healthy number and considering they spend just S$100 per trip, it would be RM320 per person or RM19 million (yet to multiply by 4 for economic multiplier) into the JB economy every weekend. Hopefully you understand why I am positive with the RTS once it starts.
