What’s latest with my dear Langkawi island?

What’s latest with my dear Langkawi island?

How long have you never been to Langkawi? I did not ask if you have ever been to Langkawi because as a Malaysian, we would most probably have been to Langkawi before. If we have not, time to go because even foreign tourists are visiting too. It’s an island I like because it’s a mere one hour of flight from KL. Perhaps even lesser than an hour. When I was based in Penang, I think I go Langkawi every year. Just too near and just a ferry ride away too. Super simple lah. Last year I visited but this year not yet.

Latest award for the Langkawi International Airport (LGK)?

Let’s be factual. If Langkawi does not have the number of tourists flying in, no one will be giving an award called Airport Service Quality yeah. Haha. It’s also categorized under the 2-5 million passengers and this is an Asia Pacific award too. As per the statement, this is the 4th time Langkawi International Airport has won this award. Reasons for the win include passenger feedback, efficiency, cleanliness, comfort and overall service quality of the LGK too.

Article in malaysiaairports.com.“Langkawi International Airport (LGK) has once again been named Best Airport in Asia Pacific (2-5 Million Passengers) at the 2024 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards by Airports Council International (ACI). Marking its fourth consecutive win, this achievement reflects Malaysia Airports’ dedication to service excellence and continuous growth, further solidifying its role as a key aviation hub in the region.

The ASQ Awards, based on real-time passenger feedback, assess crucial aspects of the airport experience, including efficiency, cleanliness, comfort, and overall service quality. LGK’s consistent success reflects Malaysia Airports’ strategic efforts to optimise passenger experience, accelerate digital transformation and uphold world-class standards. .” Article in malaysiaairports.com.

How many tourists visit Langkawi, really?

Last year, I visited it once. This year, still deciding if I will visit in December. Below are the past numbers and also the forecasted for 2025.

“The island expects over 3 million visitors in 2025, with 1.8 million recorded by August 2025. Tourist numbers dropped significantly in 2021 due to the pandemic but have since been recovering, with a 323,115 increase in visitors from 2022 to 2024.

  • 2024: 2,904,629 visitors
  • 2023: 2,810,322 visitors
  • 2022: 2,581,605 visitors
  • 2021: 1,093,937 visitors (due to the COVID-19 pandemic)
  • 2020: 1,804,556 visitors
  • 2025 (Projected): Over 3 million visitors expected”

One nice video I saw in Youtube is as below

Nothing fancy, just describing things we could do. Nothing about those 5-star type of experience which is also possible if you so choose as well. Enjoy!

What do I usually do when I am in Langkawi?

Chocolates lah. Frankly… the prices are definitely lower compared to Kuala Lumpur supermarkets. Let’s not even start speaking about the choices. Reason for it being so cheap? Competition lah. Within 5km radius, you can easily find 5 duty-free shops selling chocolates. My daughter is happiest because she’s not just looking at chocolates but also other types of candies too. My son is okay-okay only. Old Gold Original is his love.

Alcohol lah. I do not usually drink, even in business settings. At most maybe a pint of beer or one glass of wine and that’s it. For alcohol, choices are aplenty. Prices are definitely cheaper versus Kuala Lumpur. While it’s not as many shops in terms of availability versus chocolates, this is still one tiny little island where you can still have a can of beer for just RM1.xx It used to be just RM1 but these days, I think more shops are at RM1.xx . Many beer brands I have never seen before too. This was where I started to try the below:

Beach and Sand

With two young kids, beach is where we spend a lot of time too.

Last year, we went out in a private yacht too

If you have 10-12 people you could rent the whole private boat to yourself or you could also join a bigger boat too. They will go to some nice place with waters below and you could jump into the sea too. Of course with the safety jacket yeah. On the last occasion, we saw some dolphins too. Can also swim to the shore too, usually a small stretch of sandy beach in these secluded nice place. Langkawi does have 99 islands or more yeah.

Some typical hotel and their rates? Still good price lah
