New Capital City Nusantara: Why and Progress
Okay, if you have not heard about this Nusantara capital city, then it’s time to follow its news a bit more closely yeah. This is the new capital city of Indonesia and is supposed to replace Jakarta in the future. Many reasons which we will go through below too. If everything goes according to plan, this will be another source of economic growth for both Sarawak and Sabah too. Perhaps the flights between these states with Nusantara could even match the frequency of the KL to Singapore route. Do you know why it is necessary to move from Jakarta to Nusantara?
Article in washingtonpost.com. Indonesian President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, hosted the Independence Day celebrations in Nusantara, the future capital city, on Saturday.
In the years since, Jakarta has ballooned into a city of 10.5 million people, with the larger metropolitan area home to some 30 million people. But it’s sinking rapidly, and experts have said that parts of the metropolis are expected to be uninhabitable, or otherwise flood frequently, by 2030.
In 2022, Indonesia passed a law outlining the relocation’s funding and governance. The commission in charge of planning the new city said it was “imperative” to relocate the capital from Jakarta “due to the significant strain” that the city and the island of Java were experiencing from “factors such as heavy traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and dense populations.” Read a lot more details here: Article in washingtonpost.com
My trips to Sabah will include Nusantara too!
With a Sabahan wife, I visit Sabah on average 1.5 times per year for the past 20 years. Once the flight frequency is good enough and the prices become acceptable, I think we could pay a visit to Nusantara and then I could write a first hand article on it too. Sometimes, major medias would have their own perspective which may not be a perspective from the ASEAN point of view. Yes, I think ASEAN is a great group but we just have to be committed to be more complementary to one another lah. Just doing my small part to ensure we speak as one grouping.
Happy understanding why Nusantara is needed and why if Nusantara is successful, it will definitely boost both Sarawak and Sabah too.
