When rental is too high, shops open the whole day
My good friend from Hong Kong was very surprised when she saw some shops which open for breakfast close after lunch. Meanwhile some shops which will open till late night opens only at 5pm. She says in Hong Kong, shops stay open the whole day because they need to maximize the earnings to cover the rental. Well, we are lucky that rental has yet to become too high that shops must stay open the whole day just to cover the rental. One day, maybe all shops have to open the whole day. However, there’s something very important that we must always do; maximising the value from assets which we have.
KTMB is seeking to do just that; maximizing returns from existing assets. Read on:
Article in nst.com.my “Malaysians will be able to travel on the Electric Train Service (ETS) 24 hours a day during festive seasons, starting with the upcoming Chinese New Year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said.
Loke said the move is part of the government’s efforts to optimise Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) assets and increase capacity during periods of high demand.
“Previously, KTMB did not fully utilise all train sets during festive seasons, keeping some in reserve in case of malfunctions.
“I have instructed KTMB to optimise its assets and ensure additional services are available, including unscheduled journeys, similar to how airlines add extra flights during peak periods,” he said at a press conference here today after attending the Transport Ministry’s 2026 New Year Address.
He said the 24-hour ETS service will be available during major festive seasons such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, allowing more passengers to travel comfortably without relying on long road journeys.” Article in nst.com.my
When more trips equal to higher fixed cost coverage
Just like the airlines, the duration that the plane stays on the ground is a cost. When it is flying, it is earning revenues for the airline. If an airline could fly an additional flight every day, that’s total number of passengers x the ticket prices and that’s an additional boost to the airline. This is also the same for trains too. The duration it does not carry passengers meant it’s lying idle. Every extra trip could be a few hundred passengers x the ticket price too. Let’s wish this to be continuous and informed in advance so that more people could plan for this too. Driving during holiday seasons are NOT fun at all…
Thank you KTMB staffs for doing this for us.
