Did you know these two badminton players earned RM1.49 million prize money in just 1 year?
None other than my two favorite badminton heroes
Pearly and Thinaah of course. Their friendship, their abilities and yes, that language advantage where whoever they play against, they can speak a different language loudly and no one knows what they are saying. Versus you know lah… some language, we all understand perfectly and easily. 🙂 It was reported that as at the end of the BWF World Tour Finals, they have earned RM1.49 million in prize money.
This is just prize money, it does not include their monthly salary from Badminton Association of Malaysia yeah. That’s not disclosed but yes, I read from many news that it’s also a 7-figure sum per year too. They deserve it yeah. Sportswomen cannot play forever. Maybe by the time they are 30, they will no longer be competitive enough for the top 3 and thus prize money would be lower too. Do read the news of their prize money as below:
Article in nst.com.my. Women’s doubles Pearly Tan – M-Thinaahearned RM1.49 million (US$364,915) in prize money this season, underpinned by a consistent run on the BWF World Tour.
The world No. 2 could have reached the RM2.5 million mark had they won the lucrative World Tour Finals (WTF) in Hangzhou, which concluded on Sunday.
A first title at the event would have earned them US$252,000 (about RM1.03 million) — the highest prize money offered by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
However, a hectic schedule of 18 World Tour events took its toll, with Pearly – Thinaah Pearly-Thinaah earning US$60,000 (RM245,000) after reaching the semi-finals on Saturday.
Despite the defeat to Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto-Yuki Fukushima, the WTF prize money remained their largest single-tournament payout of the year.
Beyond financial gains, Pearly-Thinaah won titles at the Thailand Open, Arctic Open, and Kumamoto Masters, all of which are Super 500 events. Article in nst.com.my.
Will I encourage my children to play sports and become a professional?
When my wife enrolled my daughter into Olympiad Maths class and made her miss her volleyball lesson, I informed my wife my very serious intent. If these two classes timing clashes again in the future, the choice is sports and not Maths or Science or whatever other subject. There will always be time to catch up the studies but the opportunity to play sports for school, state and country, once lost is lost forever.
Due to the schedule, my daughter represented the school in Olympiad Maths but no longer plays volleyball for the school. As she likes sports, she is now a good badminton player. Achieved 2nd in the inter-class tournament too. It’s not an easy choice for parents. However, my personal opinion as of now is for them to play the sports they like. If they proceed beyond school into state or national level, I will provide full support. They need a degree at the end of the day but that’s later and can still be done. Missing opportunities is forever.
