Which footballer earns the MOST money in 2024? How much?

Actually, I do think most people could answer this question no matter you love this footballer or you hate him. Not many are in-between. Haha. Yes, it’s Christiano Ronaldo. He is reported to be earning US$260 million in 2024. Yes, this is ONE year’s earning and not from the day he started playing until 2024. Take a look at the image below for the numbers of not just him but also all the other other high earners too.

Why is he paid so much?

The team with him gets to sell a lot more jerseys. The team gets a lot more exposure simply because of his name. The team also could attract more big names because he is already in the team. I think we can say the team may also be getting better results too since Ronaldo is still playing well despite his age. He is 39 years old in 2024 and will be 40 next year. Not many players, except for goalkeepers play beyond 35 years old and still performing at the level he is today.

The brands which sponsor him will also get more exposure, higher sales numbers and of course could be seen in a positive light if that’s what the potential buyers see in Ronaldo.

Footballers cannot play forever yeah, that’s why

Ronaldo is already playing many extra years versus typical footballers. However, footballers cannot play forever and that’s why their earnings need to sustain them until after their retirement and if we look at the life expectancy, then they would need the financial means to sustain their life for at least the next 35 to 40 years. Not many can become famous coaches after retirement. Not everyone could continue to get sponsorship deals after they retire. Not many could have invested their money wisely during their footballing days.

In fact, many could have spent, spent and spent and when they retire may realise that they do not have enough. This is why I think footballers should also need to have financial awareness because their career is much shorter than most working professionals. I know, someone would say that these footballers could just take up simple jobs in the corporate world etc.

Let’s be very real here yeah. If you have been playing football from the age of 12 until when you retire at 35, what kind of job could you do which could satisfy you because you have been earning hundreds of thousand or even millions for the last few years of your footballing career? Logically? Tough. However, if they have invested or even just leave sufficient amount in the fixed deposits, I think they can live based on interest payments alone.

All the best dear footballers!
