Thailand has more tourists than Malaysia. Big concern?
Before the arrival of Covid-19, Malaysia has these numbers when it comes to tourism. “A total of 26,100,784 international tourists visited Malaysia in 2019 compared to 25,832,354 in 2018. Meanwhile, tourist expenditure in 2019 rose by 2.4% to RM86. 1 billion compared to RM84.” Source: tourism.gov.my. We know, tourist numbers fell tremendously when Covid arrived in all countries. So, has the numbers recovered already for Malaysia? Are we again earning huge tourism revenues?
Article in vnexpress.net. Thailand ranked 8th on a list of the world’s 50 most visited tourist destinations as its international tourist number this year is estimated at 39.1 million, surpassing Southeast Asian neighbors such as Malaysia and Vietnam.
Malaysia ranked 14th as its foreign tourist arrivals are forecast to reach 26.1 million this year, ahead of Vietnam (21st), Indonesia (27th), and Singapore (28th), according to WP Travel which offers free web plugins for tour operators, travel booking and trekking agencies.

2024 is back to 2019 numbers (which was already a record at the time)
Yes, we are behind Thailand which has amazing numbers. However, we now have chance to scale new heights. So, time to sit down, really put effort into getting more tourists to come. Our sights, sounds, white sandy beaches, delicious cuisines (which is not just from one race) or all the UNESCO Heritage places, we actually have it all and more. I have not even started about the prices of accommodation and choices which are again second to none.
So, sometimes, I do wonder why do people still prefer other countries but not Malaysia. I know one reason maybe… Malaysians love to visit overseas and many Malaysians have never even visited Sarawak or Sabah… In other words, we could not even share with others when they ask about the nice places to visit in all the states in Malaysia. Happy visiting yeah.
