How would I know if my tenant is growing cannabis? (ganja)

Do you worry sometimes about the hanky-panky which your tenant could be doing?
Sometimes, it is very hard to determine for sure about the personality or even the behavior of the tenant. Maybe they were good and after they have started, they could turn into someone else. Luckily for me, my tenants have been good to me. However, the below condo unit owner may not have it as smooth as me. Police arrested the tenants and the charge was none other than ‘growing ganja plants.’
Many years ago, a close friend told me that a condo unit in his development was used as a drug processing plant. His condominium is around 1,200 sq ft. I have stayed there a few times. How did people find out? He said he has no idea but surely some sign or science? Then, today I read this piece of news about police arresting a couple who planted ganja (cannabis) inside their condo unit! The unit was rented and it’s in a neighborhood regarded as affluent.
Article in nst.com.my A couple was arrested by police on suspicion of growing ganja plants in their rented condominium unit in Bangsar here last night.
Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said they were arrested during a raid by the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Crime Investigation Department on the condominium unit at about 11.30pm.
“During the inspection, police found two suspected ganja plants and 27 grammes of dried leaves believed to be ganja, worth about RM1,210,” he said in a statement today.
He said the 48-year-old male suspect admitted to learning how to grow ganja through an online video platform.
The man also tested positive for drugs and has a previous record related to a similar offence. Article in nst.com.my
How do I know it’s a ganja plant?
If people are planting it inside their condo, how would I know? Well… SMELL. As per online readings (just google ‘how do I know it is a cannabis plant) take a look at the below. This should be one major reason how people could find out what plant it is. Especially the neighbors next door or even the upper and lower floors too. This is also how someone would know and call the police and the police are then able to take action and surely they know the smell as soon as they are nearby the unit.
- Genetics and strain: Some cannabis strains are bred to be more pungent and odorous than others. “Skunky” or “gassy” strains contain high levels of terpenes that can be detected from hundreds of feet away, even from a basement grow. Other strains have a much fainter aroma.
- Growth stage: Cannabis plants produce the most odor during the flowering and harvesting stages. During the initial growth (vegetation) stage, the smell is often minimal. The odor is also particularly intense during the harvesting and curing process.
- Number and size of plants: A single, small plant will produce less odor than a larger plant or a commercial-sized grow operation. Large-scale hemp farms, for instance, can sometimes be smelled for up to a mile away.
- Wind and airflow: For outdoor grows, wind is the most critical factor. A light breeze can carry the smell for dozens of feet, while a strong wind can carry it for hundreds of yards or more. For indoor grows, the ventilation system determines how the smell travels. Without proper filtration, the odor can easily leak through vents, windows, and doors.
- Humidity and temperature: High heat and humidity can intensify and help carry smells, allowing the odor to travel farther on warm days. Source: google.com

Potential Precautions?
Know who you are renting to, even if they are willing to pay high rental. Sometimes, the reason they are going to some upscale place is also because they feel they feel it is safer and it would arouse less suspicion.
Visit them occasionally (use eyes and nose to know…). If eyes could not see but we smell something pungent, ask them and when they show us, we will know because we have seen the photo in kopiandproperty.com article.
Speak to neighbors, know them well so that maybe they could inform us too. This is the best actually. I remember my neighbor told me when I visited that my tenant has not been around for a few days. Get to know them and they could tell us more things.
Happy knowing so that we could also be prepared too.
