The busiest airport in Malaysia is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA and KLIA2). In I flew to Bristol, UK for my studies via the Subang airport. That was like long, long, long time ago. Fortunately we have the foresight to build KLIA and not continue to rely on Subang airport even if the current Subang airport already look very modern compared to the time when I took my flight via KLM to Amsterdam and then change into a small SAAB plane to Bristol. Yeah, SAAB is a car brand but it’s a PLANE which I took. Haha. Still in service today, by the way.
After the busiest airport, we have the second busiest which is the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and then Penang International Airport (PIA). Kuching International airport comes next followed by the 5th busiest airport in Malaysia; Johor’s Senai Airport. Actually, it’s not an easy task being Senai Airport yeah. It’s right next to Changi International airport and this meant that it has to grow traffic from passengers who prefer to come to JB instead of through Singapore. So, what’s happening to the Senai Airport?
Article in nst.com.my Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), a member of MMC Group, today had successfully handled four million passengers in a single year for the first time since its opening in 1974. SATS chief executive officer Md Derick Basir said passenger volume for full year 2019 will hit 4.2 million, a significant increase of 20 per cent as compared to 3.5 million passengers handled in 2018.
He said, “The growth is mainly attributed by the increased capacity created by the introduction of new routes and the additional flight frequencies to existing routes such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Seoul.” Senai Airport handles an average of 110 flight movements daily with 80 per cent of its operations and passengers contributed by AirAsia. With a maximum capacity of 4 million, Senai airport will now undergo a RM20 million terminal expansion which includes the extension of existing arrival and departure halls towards the south of the terminal building. I happened to be in Johor Bahru at the moment. Typing this article from an AEON foodcourt. My personal feel is this. If Johor can build up itself to be a tourist destination of choice. In other words, there are so many attractions which is NOT available in Singapore, then it will help in improving the number of visitors flying into JB directly instead of via Singapore. Think NATURE… Sun, Sea and Shop too yeah… The last one, SHOP is needed because else the visitors may prefer to go Singapore instead.
Secondly the connectivity between Johor and other states, for example, Melaka should be enhanced tremendously. Visitors could be tempted to fly into JB and they get to visit TWO states at one go. This will be a win-win situation for both states really. Come up with itineries where the two states are partnering one another. It’s really possible yeah. The two state tourism ministers just have to arrange for meetings over teh tarik. They could also call me too if needed. I go to Melaka and JB at least 10 times per year in total. Haha.
