Disallow my Facebook access? I resign.

wpid-img_20150724_203614.jpgI read something interesting when I was on board a plane to Bangkok. It’s in the image beside this article. 39% of employees would resign if their current employer forbids them from using Facebook. While some would point out that these people are just plain foolish, I think it’s important to look at it from another perspective. Perhaps these people are confident  about their prospects. They are not afraid to leave because they believe they can find another job easily.
Nearly 17 years ago, when I started working, my father told me to work hard. Show capability and I would be promoted. Few years ago, I told my brother that if the work does not give value, look for a better one. I think in the future, I may want to advise my daughter and my son to do whatever they like and just be good at it. Truth is when we are great in what we do, that’s already a career. Plus invest so that we can continue to have the choice to do what we love to do. One day all of us would be old. Perhaps old enough that employment is hard to come by or we just want to relax after working for over thirty years. Seriously how many of us love working for over thirty years?  I don’t. I love my current job and I work hard but I love my family more. I know all the time I work would be the time I lost from not seeing them grow. All the time I spent travelling for work would be the time lost for vacations with them.
I would not resign because of Facebook access rights, that’s for sure. However I would leave if my current employer no longer treats me respectfully for what I do. That’s the confidence that all of us should have. Be good in what we do. Work hard. Keep learning. Most importantly,  invest for more financial flexibility to keep our independence in selecting what we want to do. Oh yeah, our current employer does not owe anyone a living. Happy learning.
