Penang LRT News: What’s coming soon?

This article is updated on 12th July with the latest stations as per this report: thevibes.com (click to read full article) Thanks to a reader David Lim who pointed out.

I just read that the LRT line for Penang is finalised. In fact, it’s now in the open tender phase too. For Penangites who may want to take the public transport and only drive when it’s necessary, this is good news yeah. Let’s also not forget that the petrol price will be going up too and that’s not a great news versus a potentially lower cost when one takes the LRT instead.

Article in penangpropertytalk.com Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow sent a confirmation letter to the Transport Ministry two weeks ago, solidifying their agreement with the proposed alignment.

Chosen alignment aligns closely with their original plan, albeit with some modifications. Notably, the original LRT line did not include an extension to Penang Sentral in Butterworth. The new alignment begins at Silicon Island and connects Penang Sentral to the Macallum area in George Town, enhancing future connectivity to other lines.

The project is now in the open tender phase. Construction is set to commence once the tender process is finalized. SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd has been appointed to build the first segment of the project, with construction anticipated to begin in September. Do read more here: Article in penangpropertytalk.com

The Sungai Nibong express bus terminal will serve as an interchange for the LRT and public stage buses.

LRT does require lifestyle change yeah

It may require some adjustments. Some walking would be needed because the LRT station cannot be just outside our door step yeah. Sometimes when we want to buy a lot of things, perhaps driving or taking the GRAB is better than walking around with a few kg of stuffs. I know in some countries people are used to doing such things but I am not too sure for Penangites.

Question is always are Penangites ready to change their lifestyle. The state government could also encourage this if they follow like what our southern neighbour does. If you drive to the city centre in Singapore… the charge is based on the roads you drive into… plus the parking fee is increased a lot higher versus the current charge. If we just ‘hope’ that more people will take the LRT but everything remains the same, then everything will remain the same yeah.
