LRT Penang, positive signs from SPAD.

This is a piece of news which is positive for Penangites and me. Seriously, Penang needs a LRT. The jams are getting heavier by the day. Okay, if it’s a tram, I guess it is still okay but having visited cities with LRTs instead of trams, I think I favour LRT more. I also think Malaysia has more LRT expertise compared to tram. Penang State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said SRS Consortium, the Project Delivery Partner for the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) has met SPAD last week for discussions. “They have met and its seems favourable to the state,”
In fact, Penang government is hopeful that conditional approval would begin for its first line Bayan Lepas light rail transit (LRT) project from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) by July. Chow then added that once approved, the state may start a three-month public inspection beginning August, to allow public feedback. The construction should start in 2017 and the operations for the first phase should happen in 2023 while the full line should be operational by 2030. Once approval is obtained, Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be set up to administer the implementation of the projects.
Penang Transport Master Plan includes the Bayan Lepas LRT project, along with the Pan Island Highway link and the reclamation of two islands off southern Penang. The RM27 billion PTMP projects also consist of a 6.5-kilometre undersea tunnel, three highways and Penang Sky Cab. It was reported recently that the Sky Cab has not been approved recently. I only wish that all these could be implemented soon as possible. Keep politics out because this is for the stat’s future. In other words, Penangites future. Happy reading.
