Langkawi will get bigger and RM40 billion GDV too

My personal thoughts about Langkawi

“But there’s nothing there!” this was a comment from a good friend when he learnt that I go Langkawi once a year (when there were no COVID-19). Actually, the reason I go to Langkawi is because I can just relax, drive that rented car to all the small little corners all around the island, wake up late for breakfast, have coffee breaks anytime I feel like it and even laze around the pool or the beach.

These days, it’s more of whatever the kids like to do, we can do and there’s no need to allocate any time limits too. So, perhaps my friend would be happy that there may be more things happening in Langkawi in the future. RM40 billion in estimated gross development value (GDV) yeah. It’s a WOW even if this is in Klang Valley (Greater KL) yeah.


Article in Widad Business Group Sdn Bhd (WBG), an integrated facility management, property and construction conglomerate, is planning to build a mixed development project in Pulau Langkawi, Kedah with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of RM40 billion. Widad is also a majority stakeholder of Bursa-listed Widad Group Bhd and Dataprep Holdings Bhd.

WBG said it intends to erect a man-made island which will eventually span approximately 1,000 acres or 50% of the entire area, as currently, almost 90% of the 1,979-acre site consists of the ocean. Once completed, Widad@Langkasuka will comprise tourism components such as five- and six-star hotels and resorts, an international golf course, an international business and office complex, shopping malls, higher learning institutions, healthcare facilities and luxury residences. Yes, this is why the title of this article is that Langkawi will get bigger. This is going to be a reclamation project. It makes sense too actually because any beach fronting land is already consisting of many layers of homes, hotels, chalets before we could even see the sea… As for the debate about reclamation and nature, I think better leave all these to the experts. As someone who has visited many countries, it’s really possible for both to exist at the same time.

Any development plan which could attract more foreign tourists into Malaysia and specifically Langkawi in this case is definitely a good thing. Perhaps the important thing would be the content of the whole development plan. Just need to understand that building just hotels alone will not be enough. It has to be a fully-integrated package because tourists would need activities to do and not just do like what I do in Langkawi which is, not much.
