KLIA is the top airport in Malaysia. Which airport is second placed?

I have no idea how many times have I gently reminded people that the second busiest airport in Malaysia is not the Penang International Airport (PIA). 🙂 I think most of them are Penangites who’s very pro-Penang. It’s important to be proud of our own state but facts remain facts yeah. I am also a proud Ipohan but I know the limitations of Ipoh Airport. 🙂

Below is the latest numbers until 2023. Yes, it’s true that the gap is very close in 2023. Both airports have not been able to go back to their highest point yet which was 9.4 million for KKIA and 8.3 million for PIA, both achieved in 2019.

KKIA also needs a further upgrade a few years later too but for now…

One reason why the second busiest airport; Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) cannot grow very fast is also because it’s already quite full… In fact in 2019, it was close to full capacity already! It needs an upgrade like what PIA had many years ago. Fortunately, this is happening currently and should be completed within 2024. Latest news below:

4th is Kuching International Airport (KIA) and this is their story

Instead of just an upgrade of the existing terminal, this is what Sarawak Premier Abang Johari said,

I really admire such a view and I do think if all the plans come to fruition, KIA may even challenge both PIA and KKIA in terms of passenger numbers. Healthy competition is great. Spurring everyone to move faster too.

My wish is simple. PIA, KKIA and KCH Airport to increase their passenger number by 50 percent within 5 years!

PIA serves all the travellers coming into Malaysia from the northern side. After visiting Penang, they can then move to other states too. This is very good for the economy. KKIA and Kuching International Airport (KCH) serve all the travellers coming into Malaysia from the other side yeah and it’s also very near to Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara too. Growth is very certain, the question is just how soon. So, if population number and potential growth is taken into account, all these three airports should have a lot of growth. Let’s wish them all the best!
