Huge savings just from pumping petrol alone
I rented a car in my trip to Melbourne.
I wanted to drive to some places during the weekends, so I rented a car. Take a look at my MG3. Brief review? Fuel consumption is on the low side, it sips and not gulps. Driving wise, erm… do not drive too fast. Power wise, erm… climbing hills not its specialty. On a straight flat line, pick up is good. Size wise, pretty good for a small car and it looks bigger when it’s right beside a Polo or a Mazda 2 for example which are supposed to be same class. My Melbourne friend told me that this is presently the cheapest car an Australian could buy. The price is even cheaper than used car of similar size but the typical Japanese, Korean or American brands! Haha.
So, if you like you can also rent this car the next time you are in Melbourne. I used QEEQ (just download the app and try it out) and the car rental price per day is roughly RM100 per day. (excluding insurance)

I realized petrol price shopping would save us a lot per pump!
Take a look at the typical average prices in Australia. Australians are still using RON 91 yeah.
- Northern Territory: $2.12/L
- South Australia: $1.87/L
- ACT: $1.93/L
- NSW: $1.91/L
- Queensland: $1.97/L
- Tasmania: $1.97/L
- Victoria: $1.92/L
- Western Australia: $1.89/L
Melbourne is in state of Victoria. I pumped petrol twice and both times were at AUD1.63 / litre. So, yes, I managed to save quite a lot just from these two pumps. If we assume a full tank to be 40 litres and the price difference is the average minus what I paid for.
AUD1.92 minus AUD1.63 = AUD0.29 per litre. 40 litres x 29 cents = AUD11.60
This AUD11.60 is enough for one meal at Jalan Alor Malaysia restaurant which my friend brought me to. Nasi Lemak with curry drumstick is just AUD10. Photo below:

What if I pumped the highest every time?
At the petrol station very close to the airport, it was AUD2.23 per litre!! This is crazy yeah. It’s an extra 60 cents per litre! That’s AUD24 per full tank! Can eat for two in the Malaysian restaurant! Haha.
So, if we pump once per week, on a yearly basis, the highest versus the lowest could be as follows:
AUD24 x 4 x 12 = AUD 1,152
This is enough to even pay for a Melbourne to KL flight yeah. I believe this is also why smart people will become richer. If we did not bother and simply pump at any petrol station we come across, chances are we will be losing a lot! All the best in searching for the petrol station with the lowest price and getting the savings!
