HK Express: Your Low-Cost Journey to Hong Kong
I have taken HK Express from Penang all the way to Fukuoka before but now it’s flying from Subang!
In January this year, I left my children with my brother in Penang and flew to Hong Kong followed by Fukuoka with my wife. She did not know it’s Hong Kong until we arrived at the Penang International Airport. She did not know about Fukuoka until one day before we left Hong Kong! Haha. It was a surprise trip but I did advise her on clothes to bring and also her passport. HK Express is a low cost airline yeah. It’s Cathay Pacific’s wholly owned low-cost subsidiary.
The relationship is like Firefly with Malaysia Airlines or Scoot with Singapore Airlines or Jetstar with Qantas. Basic idea is, whether you like full service or you like little service, you should travel with us. No airline wants to lose out on some customers just because they prefer cheaper fares or actually does not mind not having food throughout the flight.
Now, HK Express flies to Hong Kong from Subang Airport
An old friend told me that he went to Hong Kong during the weekends just to do some shopping and eating. I asked how many days, he answered, ‘the weekend.’ Wow. Is Hong Kong like next to Malaysia or something? Haha. Okay, if the price is right and the ride duration is just 4 hours plus, maybe it’s worth a second look or even a serious consideration.
Take a look at what I found below. Without the fuel surcharge, the flight from Subang to Hong Kong is merely RM400 plus! Even including the fuel surcharge, it’s still a respectable RM606.

How much in total is needed then?
Well, RM606 for flights, hotel rates as below for 2 nights and maybe an extra RM1,000 for food and travel for that 2 days plus lots of walking, suddenly overseas holidays looks achievable for everyone. Maybe that next overseas destination could be Hong Kong? The below room rate is for 2 pax, so, if traveling as a couple like my friend, then it is even cheaper too.
Hong Kong is very well connected via trains and buses and even UBER and you can take the MTR to virtually anywhere you like including even to Shenzhen too.

How was my experience on HK Express?
It was on time. Both the departure and the return, both were on time. Seats were thin but it’s okay since 4 hours meant you can always get up and go to the toilet twice too. You can order food and it’s all HK typical fare. In fact they are delicious just from the explanation alone. Take a look: Imagine having delicious HK food onboard the plane. Then sipping the HK Milk Tea. Haha. Nice lah.

It’s low cost, so of course you have to buy even the luggage too
My advice? Travel light lah. Just 2 nights, what do you want to carry…? Save the money and maybe buy that ‘I Love Hong Kong’ T-shirt at Temple Street. Plus lots to see. Plus lots of eat. I also want to tell you that the ‘rudeness’ of the server often talked about? These days, they have mellowed down tremendously lah. Business is to be welcomed and customers are much more appreciated. I was in one slightly above medium range restaurant and the waiter even passed me the menu and told me that I could take a look first and then call her when I am ready to order. This was just a few months back.
Below is their latest offer too. I did not find the RM112 return tickets though. Maybe you have more patience and luck.

Happy traveling!
