EV News: Close to 1,000km range and could be charged in 9 minutes?

I just told my brother on Sunday that if I were to drive an EV back to Ipoh from KL, I may not need to charge the battery if the range is good enough. You see my home back to my Ipoh home is a mere 198km. To and fro, would be around 400km. If the EV offers a range of 500km and I conservatively take a 20 percent discount, it will still leave me with 400km range.

Perhaps the only issue is, potential traffic jam. Haha. Oops. Or I just need to buy an EV with a much higher range. What about 965km range then? WOW. 9 minutes charging? WOW WOW. At the SNE Battery Day 2024 expo in Seoul, South Korea, the company unveiled its pilot production line for solid-state batteries, a development that is likely to be a game-changer for the EV industry. The initial batches of these next-generation batteries have already been shipped to automotive manufacturers for testing.

The battery boasts the ability to power an electric vehicle for up to 965 km on a single charge, with a charging time of just nine minutes. This would, however, require infrastructure capable of charging speeds between 480 kW and 600 kW. Price of EVs depend on batteries

If batteries for EVs could be made cheaper, then the price of EVs could be lower too. This latest battery from Samsung as per the article says that it’s more expensive and thus would only be for the luxury segment cars only. I think this is just temporary because when it comes to technology, it’s hardly just one company who could do it. Once it could be done and proven, many other tech companies could also do something similar or perhaps even another new technology too.

If battery prices do not come down, EV adoption is likely to be slower. No one wants to buy second hand EVs because they have to replace the batteries and it costs a lot of money.

The days when an EV owner needs to only charge her car once a month is coming, maybe. 🙂
