Higher starting pay? What to major for the future?

Higher starting pay? What to major for the future?

Choice of RBT (Reka Bentuk Teknik) versus ASK (Asas Sains Komputer) for lower secondary school

My daughter’s in Form 1, so I have to understand a little about the current education system. My wife asked, RBT or ASK? I asked, more RBT students or more ASK students. She said other parents say ASK is tougher and thus fewer students. My answer was, ‘choose the one with fewer students.’ Haha. Just kidding. I actually went online to search and read more before asking her to choose ASK lah. Plus I consulted my retired friend who’s a former Senior Manager in Bank Negara Malaysia. She knows way more than me and her choice was also ASK of her three children

Form 1 – 3 are just the starting point.

Everything really mean something with SPM results or the Pre-U which is STPM results. However, ASK could also lead to potentially a Computer Science degree path if the student’s up for it. If one takes up the RBT instead, then it would be much harder to come back to Computer Science path in the future. Just remember that when there’s a will, there’s always a way. However, starting on the right way is an easier way.

Typical starting pay to confirm the choice?

Next I went to search for the typical starting pay and I realized Computer Science has now become the ‘peak’ and no longer Engineering during my days. Take a look at below. Next I also asked a Senior Manager in an Australian MNC for the salary range for a fresh / junior (with 1 year experience) and she confirmed that that typical range is accurate. In fact she said her company would pay higher than RM4,000 mentioned in the range, much closer to the median pay instead.

Starting pay is important but growth is much more critical

How long we need in order to climb the corporate ladder would depend on what we do, how fast we learn and whether we demonstrate any leadership qualities at work. Imagine a super hardworking software engineer who always finish his / her work on time. However, he hardly communicates, does not join any company events and has never ever volunteered for anything beyond just what his role does… Do we believe this person will be promoted? One day, this person can be the Head of Department? You have the answer, do not need to reply me.

Earn more so that we could spend more. Earn more so that we can invest more too. Happy studying and all the best too.
