When will you get your first EV (electric vehicle)?

When will you get your first EV (electric vehicle)?

I am a laggard when it comes to technology

My view is simple. Unless I could not achieve something without it, I would prefer for others to try it first. I am okay for others to show off first. I am perfectly okay for others to queue and get it first while I continue to wait by the sideline and observe. Perhaps one main reason is also because I would prefer for things to settle prior to entering the market and paying the right price for something I need.

An EV is a statement that I am capable, financially. (just do not go into I want to save the world mode)

Electric Vehicle (EV) is not a need for me at the moment. If I do buy, it’s more to show the world that I want to contribute to saving the world? Haha. Actually, it’s not the full story, google for it and you will see perhaps Hybrid can be a better way. When we include even the battery production and disposal versus a typical petrol engined car, then there’s even a likelihood that just focusing on petrol versus electric alone is not enough if we indeed wanted to save the world.

Meanwhile as per google, here are the EV highlights for Malaysia thus far

Key highlights for 2025

  • Strong growth: EV registrations nearly doubled in August 2025 compared to the previous year, with a 95% year-on-year increase.
  • Year-to-date performance: From January to August 2025, 23,396 EVs were registered, a 63.37% growth compared to the same period in 2024. The total for the first eight months of 2025 already exceeds the 21,789 EVs registered for all of 2024.
  • Market share: EVs accounted for 4.4% of the total industry volume in August 2025.

When growth is close to 100 percent, what does that mean?

That means the potential is huge. It also meant the current numbers remain small. It’s not easy for car markets in terms of total cars sold to rise by double digits every year. So, close to 100 percent is impossible and certainly must meant that the case number was still small. I firmly believe the number could double again next year, even if the prices are said to be rising due to the EV tax holiday being over by end of 2025. Do remember that prices are supposed to be more flexible once Proton and Perodua has launched their EVs.

Proton and Perodua’s affordable offerings

Proton have one ‘affordable’ one coming up and that’s the e.Mas 5 which will be priced from RM60,000 to RM80,000. Perodua’s offering which does not include the battery pack is also said to be below RM80,000 too. If both are able to sell sufficient number of units, of course they could then price future models lower and this meant that all other competitors could also start bringing in their cheaper models too. Currently, there’s a limit in terms of pricing and thus, it’s not possible to bring the cheapest models here.

Let’s just say I will get it once EVs are ahead of combustion engine cars here in Malaysia

The number of EVs just need to double for a few more years (probably 5 years?) and we could just see this happening! Based on current momentum, we could be at 36,000 units or higher for 2025. If this is doubled in 2026, it will be 72,000 units. If this is again doubled in 2027 and we will have 145,000 units! 2028 would see 290,000 units and by 2029 when the number hits 580,000 units, the total of EV numbers should already exceed combustion engined cars here in Malaysia.

Please note that this is UNLIKELY to happen yeah. Sales cannot keep doubling once we reach a saturation point. Infrastructure wise, there are not so many charging points. Property wise, there are also not enough Malaysians with higher end condominium or landed homes who are buying an EV too. My friends wise, of all my friends who has an EV today, majority are using it as a second car yeah. Somehow the range anxiety is still something to be managed. So, it will be a long wait for me. (Unless some EV brands come and have a chat with me yeah)

Happy anticipating.
