Visit Pulau Satu to buy duty-free goods!

Everyone loves duty-free goods, I think.

Duty-free is always a good attraction for many who wants to buy goods which have high tax rate. This is also why many people travel to Langkawi and due to this, there are many duty-free shops in Langkawi which meant that prices become even more cheaper due to competition. I am not sure what’s the tax rate for luggage or chocolates actually but what I can safely say is that these two items are much cheaper than the typical prices here in KL or even versus Penang. Now, we have one more place to go and buy these duty-free goods.

Article in malaymail.com Five bills have been passed by the Dewan Rakyat to turn Pulau Satu in Forest City, Johor, into a duty-free island.

The Customs (Amendment) Bill 2024, Excise (Amendment) Bill 2024, Free Zones (Amendment) Bill 2024, Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2024, and Service Tax (Amendment) Bill 2024 were brought by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying for third reading at the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 17.

It was passed with a voice vote. During winding up debates, Lim said the Mapping and Survey Department gazetted Pulau 1, Forest City as a causeway island because it is connected by a 600-metre bridge and that gazette meets the definition of an island. The amendment to Section 2 of the Free Zones (Amendment) Bill will also mean that Pulau Satu will be listed as a duty-free island, along with Labuan, Langkawi, Tioman and Pangkor. Where is this Pulau Satu?

I am very sure we will soon have the photo. I could not find where is this Pulau Satu. If you know where is this, please share to me. Thank you very much.

Will this be a catalyst for Forest City?

Is the reason to buy any development is because it has duty-free status? If yes, does this mean all the duty-free status islands are now doing extremely well? If no, then this duty-free status for Pulau Satu will not change the reason not to buy into Country Garden currently.

Will this attract many new visitors to the area? Yes, it will, more visitors than previously. These visitors would need a place to stay (minimum 40 hours before one can buy the duty-free goods), would need places to eat (cheaper ones, higher ends ones) and would want places for entertainment (usually alcohol will be part of the reason to visit).

Without all these, no one will visit a place, stay there for 2 years and do nothing other than to wait until they could buy and bring back the duty-free items. Your cost of travelling there is already higher than the savings already.

I hope I have answered your question.
