Survey: Selayang residents asking for inclusion into MRT3 Line
SELAYANG, 25 th October 2024 – As traffic congestion and pollution worsen across urban centres in Malaysia, Selayang residents are rallying for the inclusion of Selayang in the MRT3 line. Leading the advocacy is developer 168 Park Selayang, which recognises the critical need for improved public transportation in the area. The inclusion of Selayang in the MRT3 line would not only help alleviate traffic but also enhance public transport services, which are desperately needed by the local community.
A recent survey conducted by 168 Park Selayang with data from 275 respondents who lived in various parts of Selayang including 168 Park Selayang, Taman Selayang Indah, Taman Bukit Idaman, Selayang Heights, Taman Bidara, Taman Selayang Jaya and many more found that 100% of respondents, representing residents from all socioeconomic backgrounds, fully support the inclusion of Selayang in the MRT3 line. The community’s frustration with the lack of reliable and connected public transport is clear, as many residents are forced to rely on private cars or e-hailing services for their daily commute. With 73% of Selayang’s population of 363,289 being working adults, commuting to metropolitan areas like Kuala Lumpur has become increasingly burdensome.
Key Survey Findings:
● 100% responded that they would like to have an MRT in Selayang.
● 60% of residents indicated they would use the MRT daily.
● 55% identified easier commuting as the primary reason for supporting the MRT3 line.
● 35% highlighted the significant potential to reduce traffic congestion during peak hours.
● 19% cited the area’s growing population and developments as reasons for the MRT’s
necessity.
168 Park Selayang is urging the government to prioritise Selayang’s inclusion in the MRT3 expansion plans, citing overwhelming community support and the urgent need for improved public transport in the area.
The absence of reliable public transport options was evident, with residents frustrated over the inconvenience of relying on e-hailing services, terrible traffic during peak hours, as well as commuting difficulty for members of the community such as senior citizens and students. One Selayang resident said, “With a larger population than Petaling Jaya, and with key facilities such as Selayang Hospital and UiTM nearby, it is more than justified for Selayang to have its own MRT station.” According to this survey, 27% of responders share the same sentiment.
Another Selayang resident remarked, “I support the proposed MRT line in our housing area because it will improve accessibility, making commutes easier for residents, enhancing connectivity to the city, and attracting businesses. This will reduce congestion, emissions, and even boost property values, ultimately improving our community’s quality of life.”
Selayang: Growing Urban Hub in Need of Connectivity for Sustainable Living
The survey also highlighted the environmental and cost-saving benefits of public transport. 7% of respondents pointed out that MRT fares are generally cheaper than the cost of driving, and expanding the system would reduce Selayang’s carbon footprint. Additionally, incorporating the MRT aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly rail industry, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
By the end of 2030, Selayang will see an estimated total of 6,000 new residential units, including 2000 units from 168 Park Selayang alone, creating additional foot traffic and carbon emissions.
As a city with a growing population, Selayang faces severe congestion along key routes like Jalan Kuching and MRR2 leading into Kepong as well as Jalan Ipoh to KL. Private cars, including those heading to Hospital Selayang, UiTM, and potentially towards the upcoming 168 Park Mall, account for significant traffic. This further reinforces the need for the MRT3 line to improve public transportation services.
A Call for Government Action
Lorenz Tong, Development Director of 168 Park Selayang emphasised, “The survey results highlight a crucial fact: Selayang residents deserve a reliable public transport system. 168 Park Selayang is committed to advocating for the community’s needs. A dedicated MRT station would not only improve accessibility but also significantly enhance the quality of life for everyone in Selayang.”
168 Park Selayang is actively working with authorities to advocate for Selayang’s inclusion in the MRT3 line. The company has shared its survey data with the Ministry of Transport, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), and the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd to strengthen the case for this vital expansion. With Selayang’s growing population, affordable housing options, and key facilities in the vicinity, the MRT3 line would be a transformative investment in the region’s future.
Selayang, often regarded as a hidden gem in the Klang Valley, boasts natural beauty and an emerging commercial hub with the new 168 Park Mall. A robust MRT system would act as a socioeconomic catalyst, unlocking further growth and enhancing Selayang’s appeal as a sustainable urban hub.
