Save on dining out and go travel to Japan? Here’s the possibility.

Save on dining out and go travel to Japan? Here’s the possibility.

RM1,200 average spend on dining out for Malaysians

Recently, there was a report which was everywhere saying that Malaysians spend RM1,200 per month on dining out. So, I calculated what I spend and well… it’s quite true! Haha. Why do I say so? Plus what happens if we could save 50 percent of what we spend on food every day for just one year? Yes, travel to Japan!

My own meals

Yesterday, I had dinner at an ‘economy’ rice shop. The economy is known as mixed rice these days because it is not as economical as yesterday? Or is it because we took too many of our favourite dishes causing the price to be high? If I took just one vegetable dish and the rice, I think it should be just RM4. Still affordable in my opinion. I remember my brother-in-law sharing with me how all the foreign workers eat at the canteen. They just take one big plate of rice and then put a lot of curry gravy. The total cost? RM1. The reason is because they want to send as much of their salary home. The truth is, it’s doable depending on what do we value more.

What did I take? Take a look at the below. One meat, one vegetable and one tofu. Plus free soup, free Chinese tea and it an air-conditioned place. RM10 seems reasonable?

mixed rice

If I spend a similar amount for three meals, then it will be RM30 per day or RM900 per month. The only issue is that during weekends, there’s that tendency to eat ‘better’ and thus, this RM30 is not enough for the whole day. Perhaps my average spend on food will also be similar to RM1,200?

Can we spend lesser on food? (less dining out?)

When we dine out, even if we eat the same food, we will spend another amount on drink. There’s usually also a parking fee. More importantly, are there ways to eat cheaper? Yes, there are. Options are always available and we do not necessarily repeat the same food too. Roti Canai Banjir… Mixed Rice where you take just one dish and rice plus gravy… white bread or cream crackers with a cup of milo… economy bee hoon with a fried egg… Then again, would this make us look ‘poor’? Haha. Does it really matter that much?

A holiday in Japan every year that we save 50% from the RM1,200 on dining out

If we are able to save just half of the amount, that’s RM600 per month or RM7,200 per year. Hey… this amount is enough for a holiday in Japan yeah. Take a look below:

Kuala Lumpur to Fukuoka. I have been to Fukuoka and it’s a wonderful place. Culture, Food, Sights, History and ease of transportation too. Airport to the town takes just minutes! What more can you ask for?

Hotels? Again, affordable by any standard and just look for the ones with high review ratings.

So, you see, after the flight and the stay, you still have enough money for food and also traveling around too. You can buy the Subway Unlimited Pass for just RM18++ per day. That’s less than RM20 per day. Unlimited travel using Fukuoka’s three subway lines. 🙂

Happy understanding this possibility. As they say, investment takes time. Invest your effort in saving money and you will be rewarded with a Japan trip at the end of the year. Wow. Lots of posts in social media when you travel too.
