RM55 million for 22km covered walkways in KL. Let’s all walk more?!
I love walking. Just as an example. I have walked the two routes below no less than 8 times thus far whenever I am in Hong Kong or when I am in Melbourne. Of course, the weather helps but weather or not weather, anyone who intends to walk would tell you that we need pedestrian walkways in order for people to walk safely! No one wants to look left, look right and quickly dash to the other side of the road!
The route in HK is where I walk in the morning from my hotel to Shau Kei Wan for a breakfast and then walk back to the hotel for a cup of coffee and fruits from the breakfast buffet. It’s just an hour anyway. Haha. Meanwhile, the one in Melbourne is when I walk in the evening to go to the CBD for a dinner and then I walk back. It’s merely 48 minutes.
Let’s read the below about what our Minister for Federal Territory said.

Article in malaymail.com Putrajaya will spend RM55 million to build the covered pedestrian walkways across the capital city, with the start of work scheduled for January 2027, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh told Parliament this evening.
Under Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) operating expenditure, 22 kilometres of covered walkways will be built across Kuala Lumpur’s parliamentary constituencies, with an allocation of two kilometres per constituency, she said.
Yeoh said the project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of next year.
“While no pedestrian walkways are currently under construction, implementation for next year will begin as early as January 2027,” the minister said when winding up the third stage reading of Budget 2027. Do read the article in full here. Article in malaymail.com
Expensive, you think?
I do not know enough about the cost of building these covered walkways. Perhaps it’s indeed very expensive. maybe it takes into account some places where an overhead pedestrian walkway is necessary or maybe some tunneling is needed etc? Based on the numbers announced, it’s RM55 million for a total of 22km covered walkway. So, calculation wise, that’s about RM2,500 per meter. Or RM833 per feet. I do not know enough to comment but calculation wise, that’s the “investment” or cost which the government would have to pay in order to provide the people with the convenience of walking within the city centre.
Well, I do hope more people would start walking too as the amount paid is indeed a lot. Hopefully people will not give the excuse that it’s just too hot to walk since it’s now a covered walkway. Happy walking!
