Price of vegetables in Malaysia rising three to four folds?

Price of vegetables in Malaysia rising three to four folds?

I read something which does not make sense about vegetable prices. I am sure you read about it too.

Article in nst.com.my. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the price increases had remained within a controlled and reasonable range, despite the impact of floods and the monsoon season.

She said tracking by the National Price Division found that vegetable prices in the second week of December rose by as much as 68.4 per cent month-on-month.

“The perception of ‘300 and 400 per cent increases’ stems from uneven comparisons — either comparing flood-period prices with the lowest prices of the year or comparing prices in different areas.

“Data show the increases are localised and temporary, consistent with mainstream media reports indicating rises of 30 to 50 per cent.

“The level of increase varies depending on vegetable type and locality, and no widespread doubling or tripling of prices has been detected.” Article in nst.com.my.

Can vegetable prices rise three to four folds?

Below is the price of Okra (lady’s Finger), one of my most favorite vegetable. yes, it’s more expensive than Kang Kung. Reason is simple, kang kung grows easily and far faster. Okra needs more time.

It’s RM3.89 per 250gm. If we times this by 4, that’s around RM15.50 per kg. Take a look at the price of chicken… right after. Yes, chicken is cheaper than Okra…

Chicken or Okra?

Suddenly, everyone will now prefer to eat Fried Chicken than steamed Okra….? Haha. Actually, even at current prices, I would imagine most Malaysians would choose friend chicken over steamed Okra at any time lah. So, if price of Okra increases by three or four folds, the only one folding up are the sellers lah. Who would still be buying Okra? Or maybe everyone should start growing Okra since selling it at double the current price is already very good profit.

Demand versus Supply also takes into account easy versus yucky lah

My son hates vegetables. However, he can eat roasted chicken anytime. In other words, even if price of chicken is higher, I will still have to buy chicken for him. Else, he stop eating then what will happen to me? However I know many friends who prefers vegetables over chicken. So, does it boil down to just supply of vegetables alone or it some come back to the demand for vegetables versus the demand for chicken? There’s no need to answer. We need to always be mindful that sometimes, people may say something which does not make sense, we should just ignore.

Same thing as property price rising to the clouds?

If anyone wants to sell you a property and is telling you that price will suddenly double or triple, please smile and say thank you. If the price will suddenly double or triple, the sales person would not sell you the property lah. They will buy the property themselves. If they could not, they will tell their family members to buy. Then they will tell all their good friends. After that they will tell all their friends. By then, the properties would have all been sold. There is no need for them to come to any stranger and share with them this opportunity yeah. Thank you for understanding and taking the right actions too.
