Petrol news: Why some people love to “buy” petrol in Malaysia (if they could)

I guess everyone wants low petrol prices, right? From what we read from some important ministers, I think very soon we will have higher petrol prices. Well, that’s for those who could afford it anyway. That’s the target. As for those who needs it and could not afford it, there is supposed to be some forms of targeted subsidy for them. I think this will have to work because we are not really just subsidizing Malaysians. Just look at what has happened to diesel sales and we should realize that we are subsidizing a lot to non-Malaysians too.

Malaysia’s RON95 price before any decision for subsidy rationalisation. Still pending discussions and discussions and then more discussions I believe.

Malaysia: RM2.05 per litre for RON95 – This is a wow price, actually.

This site shows all the petrol prices around the world: globalpetrolprices.com Thus, all the information below is from this site. The current average gasoline price as per this site is US$1.31 per litre. This is roughly RM6.16 per litre. As for the rumoured number after petrol subsidy is removed here in Malaysia, that number is still much lower than this world average.

Let’s look at the numbers of all the countries to our left, right, up and down.

In the Philippines, the price of 1 litre is PHP 64.05 or in RM it’s RM5.13 per lire. That’s roughly 150% higher than us here in Malaysia.

In Thailand, the price of 1 litre is THB 47.35 or in RM it’s RM6.09 per litre. That’s roughly 197% higher than us here in Malaysia

In Singapore, the price of 1 litre is S$2.76 or in RM it’s RM9.62 per litre. That’s roughly 369% higher than us here in Malaysia. I know, you want to say but they are rich people. Yeah, I guess they are. That did not stop many of them from doing their best to pump petrol and bring it back to Singapore though.

In Indonesia, the price of 1 litre is IDR 12,810 or in RM it’s RM3.69 per litre. That’s roughly 80% higher than us here in Malaysia.

My personal view

I support subsidy rationalisation. Especially after I know how many people who are non-Malaysians who are profiting from this or in order words, take away all the tax money I pay to the government from being used for me and other Malaysians here in Malaysia.

I just wish the government would spend the savings from subsidy on the things that matter to the country and not on ‘sweeteners’ for votes. Stay focused. Government consists of the people and they were supported by the people because the people expected them to work for them. Cheers.
