Osram and the massive RM4.67 Billion Kulim investment

In my previous role, I used to travel to Kulim High-Tech Industrial Park almost weekly. There were many huge multi-nationals there. I always think it’s impressive because somehow Kulim has managed to attract so many international giants to set up their plants there. Talents meanwhile are okay to work there due to the good potential career growth. Many choices for the right ones. The latest one is from OSRAM. It will be investing RM4.67 Billion to construct a new light emitting diode (LED) chip plant which will be the largest and the latest six-inch LED chip production site in the world! This is part of it’s plan to be a global semi-conductor player.
Currently, OSRAM operates in the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone and was one of the right pioneer electronic companies which started in the 1970s. With such a huge plant, it will definitely create even more jobs as well as help to attract more new high-technology plants. It will also help to complete the LED ecosystem in Malaysia. Currently, the development and production of LED clusters already include semiconductor devices for LED, wafer fabrication, lighting products and solutions (LED applications – vehicle lighting, backlights and displays). Osram has Asian competitors and said that it intends to achieve a revenue of at least five billion euros by 2020. This is 8 percent growth per year.
I think after much negativity recently from some plants operating in Penang, this is a fresh of good news. Read here: Not the best news for Penang but stay focussed please My brother used to work in Osram a few years ago and said that the company treats its employees quite well, a culture of many European companies. Many Kulim based companies also provide slightly better benefits to attract some engineers who are willing to be based there instead of working in the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone. I wish Osram all the best for its new plant and wish for its success versus its ASIAN competitors which are definitely operating outside Malaysia today. Oh yeah, there are also condos in Kulim which you can buy to rent out to these engineers. Go take a drive and find out more.
