Old, rusty and abandoned inside a strata development? Council may tow away that car!

When it comes to abandoned vehicles along some streets or roads, even within housing areas, if it’s obstructing public roads or creating potential environmental hazards, local councils and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) could remove and scrap abandoned vehicles.

We just need to report abandoned vehicles causing a nuisance to local councils (e.g., MPPJ, MBSA) or police for investigation. usually notices would then be issued and if nothing happens, the vehicle is towed to a depot and may be scrapped. Yes, MAYBE scrapped because as you know, scrapping someone’s car and then they suddenly find some valid reasons to sue you later is really a big issue lah.

Eyesore and not great for property value too

I have often driven past old, rusty and abandoned cars along the road and it’s not just an eyesore but it also affect the value of the properties around the area. Plus it is also making the road narrower because these cars are usually parked along the road and then forgotten. This gets worse when the abandoned cars are within a strata development. Since it’s NOT a public road, then the council could not do anything to it even with complaints after complaints.

What if there’s now a possibility that these vehicles could be towed away so that it would solve all the issues above? If you are also as happy as I am, that’s great! Okay, do not get too excited first. It’s not happening immediately but this is now a possibility. Read the news below:

Article in malaymail.com The government is proposing to amend the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) to expand the scope of enforcement areas of Local Authorities (PBT) to manage the issue of abandoned vehicles in strata housing areas.

Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the proposed amendment was made since PBTs do not have the power to take action in private strata areas unless there is an official application or cooperation from the Joint Management Body (JMB) and the Management Corporation (MC).Article in malaymail.com

Yes, I have seen these abandoned or forgotten cars in strata developments all the time

It takes up an additional space which could have been used by other residents. Usually these owners will prefer not to be contactable because they do not wish to spend a lot of money to get the vehicle started, drive them away and having to find another place for it. Somehow, they think just simply leaving it there is the best option. Someone may want to tell me that sometimes there’s a valid reason to leave it there. Yes, I definitely know there are many reasons but it cannot be more valid than the fact that the space is FOR everyone and not just that abandoned vehicle. So, if you abandon it and refuse to do anything about it, then please do let the authorities do something about it for the benefit of the public.
