Johor Property News: 10,000 squatters and the assistance they will get

Why do squatter houses happen

There are many reasons why this happen. Some would point out that the prices of homes become too expensive and thus people have to choice but to build squatter houses. Some may also point out that some of these people may be taking advantage of the landowner who did not know about the squatter issues until many years later.

Of course, some would now point out that it’s the fault of the local council for not taking immediate actions and waiting for the number of squatter homes to keep increasing. Anyway, regardless of who’s at fault, in the end some party has to settle this yeah.

Article in thestar.com.my Local Government Development Ministry Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that Johor will set up a special task force to help Johor solve the issues involving more than 10,000 squatter houses. He said, “We will work together to find a solution to reduce the number of squatter houses in Johor. One way is to relocate them to a People’s Housing Programme (PPR) unit.”

Akmal added that there are 21 PPR projects in Johor, 13 of which have been completed and six are still under construction. He said, “We hope that the state government can allocate some units at the PPR here to relocate squatters.”

Of the 10,301 units of squatter houses, 8,793 are in Johor Baru, 522 in Batu Pahat, 503 in Pontian while the rest are in the other seven districts. Article in thestar.com.my

How about everyone work harder to ensure this does not happen again?

Truth is, when this becomes a government issue, funds would have to be allocated. Funds which could have also been used for other purposes. For example, for tourism related projects. For example, for infrastructure improvement in villages. For example, fixing the dilapidated buildings in schools. Many more examples actually. We know funds are limited as the government has said many times. Let’s just be better in what we do so that these problems do not occur again, at least for this 10,000 squatters.
