Hong Kong has “competitive advantages” over Singapore in the global talent race?

Working from home also meant anyone could take your job too

Think very logically and seriously. We insist that we could work from home and do it exceptionally well. We also insist there is no need for any physical interaction since online is perfectly fine. At the same time, we have a monthly pay which is above the market. Well, if the company could now find a talent somewhere in the world who has internet access, they could proceed to hire this person who may be willing to accept half of our pay and work harder too.

Not yet… don’t sweat

Two countries which is often compared closely and said to be a magnet for attracting talents are Hong Kong and Singapore. Occasionally, we read about how Singapore’s universities are ranked extremely high and NUS is even within the top 10 in these rankings too. #8 in this one. Now, we hear from the Hong Kong Financial Secretary of Hong Kong that Hong Kong has “competitive advantages” over Singapore in the global talent race. The article as below:

Article in thestar.com.my Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po made the comparison after Hong Kong recently secured fifth place in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking. Singapore came away with the top spot on the list.

Despite their strong overall performance among the 67 ranked economies, Hong Kong and Singapore were among the weakest in the “prices” category, coming in at 65th and 62nd, respectively.

The finance chief said the city offered very desirable career development opportunities for mainland Chinese talent arriving from across the border and overseas, especially as professionals in certain fields came under pressure amid recent geopolitical tensions.

He said, “When you contrast Hong Kong with Singapore, in terms of freedom, here is much better. And in terms of lifestyle, here you have mountains, you have beaches, the lifestyle is much more interesting.” Do read here for the full article where he mentioned many other reasons too. Which one is your choice then if you are the one deciding?

I have been to both countries many times. I have stayed in both countries for at least 2 weeks continuously. Singapore would be a country much closer to home since even if I drive, it’s a mere 351km away from Kuala Lumpur.

Hong Kong meanwhile provides that charm of being close to such a huge world market and also the fact that the food is well… better too. So, I guess it comes to the quality of life. I would still choose Malaysia yeah. This is home and I think I am grateful for all the amazing opportunities I have gotten from this tanah tumpahnya darahku. As for all of you, everyone has their perspective and preference. Go ahead and be successful in the country you love to be. All the best, whether Hong Kong or Singapore.
