Getting a wife and earning money at the same time. Wow. Illegal though…

I have friends with non-Malaysian wives. I also have friends with non-Malaysian husbands. I think it’s perfectly fine because love conquers all mah. Okay, honestly, many would also speak of stories where the marriage is for money because the other half could be from a billionaire family. I am very sure not all of these stories are real and some are just because people are jealous. I have very wealthy friends who are humble and I have ‘not-so-rich’ friends who continue to pretend and definitely not humble.

So, let’s be objective yeah. However, the following story is really getting married for money! Sign the papers, show off your new wife and your new wife starts paying you money month after month! This is to help settle gambling debts. What a deal! Until the deal was scuppered by the alert authorities yeah.

Article in channelnewsasia.com. In marrying 35-year-old Vietnamese national Bui Thi Huong so she could stay in Singapore for work, he received S$8,000 (US$6,200).

Noel Teo Junwei was sentenced to nine months and 10 weeks’ jail on Thursday (Sep 19), along with a fine of S$12,000.

He pleaded guilty to two charges under the Immigration Act, with another three charges taken into consideration.

In return, he would be paid: S$5,000 on the day of the solemnisation, S$5,000 on the day she successfully obtained a long-term visit pass under his sponsorship, and S$1,000 per month until her pass expired. Do read more for how he got caught by the authorities: Article in channelnewsasia.com.

Would you also do the same?

I have no idea of the situation the person was in which made him decided to do such a thing. Perhaps he was really at the end of his available choices. Thus, getting married and getting paid every month could be his only way to get money. Going to the banks may get rejections, going to the loansharks may be dangerous, so getting married seems like such an easy choice. Just need to note that it’s illegal to do so in many countries. I do think that for some countries, these deals may not exist because of some local circumstances too. Perhaps that country is just not attractive enough?

Personal finance is a skill which everyone should be aware and be knowledgeable in. Happy learning and stay away from illegal deals no matter how easy it seems for money to flow in.
