Staying in a landed property and in need of a new Electric Vehicle (EV) as an accessory to spruce up the place? Needing a second car which can also be a source of pride and conversation? Thinking of saving the environment since many people say EVs are friendlier to the environment? Wanted to buy and yet the price is too high since most of them are starting from 6 figures? Hey, this one’s below RM60,000 and it’s going to be built here in Malaysia by Proton. It’s the e.MAS 5.

Article in malaymail.com. Pro-Net has officially launched the new Proton e.MAS 5, which has been deemed Malaysia’s first affordable EV. The new electric hatchback is the second fully-electric offering from the national automaker after the Proton e.MAS 7, which was launched late last year.

Proton e.MAS 5 is essentially the first EV in Malaysia to be officially priced at under RM100,000. While the first batch will come from China, the EV has been earmarked for local assembly (CKD) at Proton’s new EV plant in Tanjung Malim. Article in malaymail.com

How much is the repayment every month?

Hmm… seems affordable for an EV. Haha. Note – I have no idea what’s the actual interest rate. Maybe lower, maybe slightly higher. However, I used 7 years when the maximum should be 9 years. So, monthly wise, it’s RM758. This car price is lower than even the cheapest version of the petrol engined Japanese branded Segment B cars yeah. In fact, it’s around the same price as the highest spec Proton Persona which is a B-segment petrol engined car. Take a look at the photo after the calculator.

If money’s no longer an issue, let’s look at the car itself!

What about the specs?

Do note that this EV model is more suitable for city driving. So, the lowest spec is 225km according to the WLTP standards. In other words, traveling from Sungai Buloh toll until Ipoh toll is NO ISSUES at all. Just remember to change when arrive in Ip[oh before the trip back to Sungai Buloh the next day yeah. The distance between the Sungai Buloh toll and Ipoh toll is merely 190km. So, there’s still an extra 35km in the tank… I mean battery. Ok, there will be some range anxiety if indeed there are just 35km left. Even if we drive a petrol car and that petrol indicator lights up, we also feel the anxiety too.

For all other specs, take a look below:

Will I buy?

EVs are not in my plan. Would I ask my friends and relatives to buy? Of course! It looks nice, it’s affordable and the friends and relatives whom I ask to buy are all the rich ones who could easily afford another car to complement their current car. So, I will not be buying one but I will definitely start telling people to go test drive and go buy one. So that… they could fetch me out for supper too.

Happy test driving!
