Thinking of Tuna? This is one expensive fish! US$3.2 million for just one giant bluefin.

I love tuna… in a can.

My wife just ordered a raw tuna sushi this afternoon in the Nishiki Market in Kyoto. Erm… not for me. The only time I had sushi (raw one) was way back in Tokyo in the Tsukiji outer market where one particular shop had a super long queue. Taste was ok but nah… not my type. I do think price of Tuna reflects the economic condition too. If it’s very bad, people would not want to spend so much and thus the prices cannot be that high. Of course as usual, when economy is bad, then every other demand also goes down too including property. Coming back to the amazing tuna auction price. Do read the below:

Article in malaymail.com. A Japanese sushi entrepreneur paid a record US$3.2 million (RM13 million) for a giant bluefin tuna Monday at an annual prestigious new year auction in Tokyo’s main fish market, smashing the previous all-time high.

Dave Gershman at the Pew Charitable Trusts’ international fisheries team used news of the auction to highlight that stocks of Pacific bluefin tuna were improving after being “near collapse”.

Self-styled “Tuna King” Kiyoshi Kimura’s sushi restaurant chain paid the top price for the 243-kilogramme fish that was caught off Japan’s northern coast.

“I’d thought we would be able to buy a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it,” Kimura said after the pre-dawn auction at Tokyo’s main fish market. Article in malaymail.com.

It’s 243 kg yeah but still… RM13 million

This is for the ones who know how exquisite the taste is. They want the best and freshest. Since they can afford, then of course this will proceed. This is why demand for luxury goods and services are continuing while at the same time we have people struggling to have enough to eat every day. For some of us who are not that top 5 percent wealthiest, then maybe need to start building up some savings just in case. Eating one small piece of a RM13 million tuna, even if we love bluefin tuna is not part of the investment.
