You will pay more for water! Drinking just got more expensive.

You will pay more for water! Drinking just got more expensive.

How much is water price for a bottle of water, do you know? Here’s some data:

Generally, we can conclude that the price of water in Malaysia is on the low side. Now I read that the price of water will be rising, specifically for people who use a lot more water than others. This is punishment for using too much water lah. If we are just using it for drinking, it will not be expensive. How much water can we drink anyway, right? What’s your water price? Well, mine’s on the low side. Usually just the RM6.50 per month.

Article in net.com.my “SHAH ALAM: The water tariff in Selangor will remain unchanged for domestic households consuming up to 20 cubic metres per month, with the rate maintained at 65 sen per cubic metre, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the minimum monthly charge of RM6.50 for domestic users would also remain unchanged, as this category had already seen a rate adjustment in February 2024.

However, higher water usage will be subject to new rates under a revised tariff structure that takes effect on Sept 1, 2025 for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — all of which are served by Air Selangor.

Households using between 20 and 35 cubic metres a month will see an increase of RM0.30 per cubic metre, bringing the rate to RM1.62 per cubic metre..” Full article here: Article in net.com.my

How much is this 20 cubic meter anyway?

As per google, 20 cubic meter means 20,000 liter. If we divided 20,000 liters by 30 days, that’s 667 liters per day. Assuming 4 in the family and all four drinks 2.4 liter per day, that’s just 10 liters of water out of the 667 liters. In other words, remaining would depend on how much water we use for cooking, for washing and also for showers.

The hotter the days, the more showers we could be taking even if that does not really help that much. So, 65 sen per cubic meter meant that a household could spend RM13 if they used 20 cubic meter. One year and one will spend RM156 on water. Boy, this is cheap yeah. So, do not waste water or else the water tariff would continue to rise. Not happy news for all of us when this happens.

Turn off the tap and no one should take half an hour shower. I personally support a higher tariff for those who loves to use water. If they love to use water, they should be able to afford to pay. 🙂 Happy conserving water!
