Can you ask for a higher pay or you need someone to ask on your behalf?

If your employer refuses to pay you higher, is that because they are bad?

Every now and then some of my friends would tell me that their employers are treating them badly. Chief reason is the employer does not wish to pay them good salaries. When I asked them why are they still working there if they feel that the employer is not treating them right? Some said they are still happy there, some say they could not find another role giving them the pay want and some say that other potential employers are also offering a similar pay and thus not worth for them to resign.

For some of the working people, they have their association to help them negotiate for their salary increment. Here is one such agreement where

Article in nst.com.my The Malayan Commercial Banks Association (MCBA) and the Association of Bank Officers Peninsular Malaysia (ABOM) have signed a new collective agreement that will greatly benefit bank officers across Peninsular Malaysia.

Under this agreement, ABOM members will receive a nine per cent salary increase, effective Jan 1.

The 15th CA, which covers the period from 2024 to 2026, will impact approximately 3,500 bank officers working in 10 commercial banks across Peninsular Malaysia.

Apart from the salary increase, the agreement also introduced several additional benefits, including an annual festival allowance and a monthly digital allowance. Article in nst.com.my

We should have the skills for a higher pay or the ability to earn more

These days, with more and more people working from home, it is inevitable that some employers would learn that it’s really possible to employ someone from out of the country who could do the same work for less. It used to be just call centers or also known as business process outsourcing. For example, a customer calls the call centre in the UK and the person speaking to him / her is someone based in Malaysia.

These days, it could even be a highly skilled person. For example, a developer or an online marketing person or even one whole HR team except for the head of department. In other words, if our skills are not better than someone who could do the same as us in some other countries, chances are we could lose the job or the employer will choose to pay us a similar pay too. As the world continue to become smaller with working from home, just remember to keep learning new skills or risk being replaced.

A better way may also to have the ability to earn more. Perhaps another skill like baking… or perhaps driving GRAB during the weekends. When we could earn more, we could then save more and invest more. This may just be the best way with such an advanced and uncertain world of today. Happy learning.
