Kauai

Did you read about the story of Mark Zuckerberg buying another piece of land on Kauai? More about the story later. Some photos of Kauai first. It’s the fourth largest island in Hawaii and it’s also known as Garden Island. I have an uncle staying in Hawaii. So there’s definitely a chance to travel to Hawaii one day and drop by Mark’s place in island of Kauai. I meant, stopping by the gate and taking a selfie, maybe.

First one is an image from: https://www.timeout.com/kauai. They have an article telling you about the 11 best things to do in Kauai.

Now that all of us have some idea about Kauai, let’s look into some details about Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s latest purchase.

Article in businessinsider.com

  • Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan paid $53 million for nearly 600 acres of land on Kauai.
  • The purchase brought their total landholdings on the island to more than 1,300 acres.
  • The couple’s presence in Kauai has frustrated some residents in years past.

This is what they (Mark and Priscilla) said, “We have been working closely with a number of community partners to promote conservation, produce sustainable agriculture and protect native wildlife at our ranch and in the surrounding areas, and look forward to extending that effort to Lepeuli in the months ahead.” The article is long and has lots more details. How big is 1,300 acres in Kauai?

Total size of Kauai is … 1,430 km². In acres, that is 353,361 acres. So, 1,300 acres divided by 353,361 acres meant that Mark and Priscilla owns approximately 0.37% of the whole Kauai. Certainly a small number but for both Mark and Priscilla, 1300 acres meant that they have a size equivalent to 1,300 football fields or 20,800 tennis courts. Actually, more than enough to do virtually anything they needed to.

Why do we need to know this?

When we could start a company which is used by everyone world wide, we would be rich enough to buy well, anything. We also know that it’s possible to visit Kauai when travelling is allowed again. It’s within Hawaii by the way. We also know that some times, buying ever more real estate does not necessary we have a serious plan for it or wishing to develop it to earn more money. Sometimes, people buy the land because they could afford to buy and keep the land until they decide what they wanted to do with the land. Happy reading and now you know a bit more about Kauai too, just like me.
