I hope it’s happily ever after for as many couples as possible because a divorce is not something to be taken lightly. However, it is also not up to us to judge what really happened to a couple before they decided to get a divorce. Especially one where both sides were of the same opinion; that the marriage could no longer continue. We have seen a number of these high profiled divorce cases and some of them, we actually know one side was not doing the right thing.
Now, we have another super high profile couple getting a divorce. They are Bill and Melinda Gates. They have been married for 27 years and together they have 3 kids. The youngest is 18.
Article in thestar.com.my Brief statement from both of them in twitter reads, “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the two said in a brief statement posted on Twitter. “We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”
The couple runs Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It’s already given away more than US$50bil (RM205.78bil). Both will remain co-chairs and trustees of the foundation. Separating the assets due to the divorce will pose a bigger challenge. Janet George, a family lawyer in Washington with the firm McKinley Irvin said, “It is not a mandatory 50-50. To all the young couples, always note that the things do change after marriage and when we get older and wiser. Just needed to remember that when we get married, the romance and all those lovey-dovey feeling we feel can still be around or may start to disappear BUT the next phase starts. This is the responsibility and commitment phase. For example, it is NOT about she disallowing me to go out for happy hours but it should also be, ‘I think I should not be going out for happy hour as frequently as previously because I do not wish my partner to be alone at home.’
Love goes beyond just words. Action matters too. Remember to also ensure the other half has enough protection if something happened to us. If we are sad when we lose a good friend, think how would our other half felt when they lose us. Do not add into their sadness the need to fend for themselves financially too. Yes, I still do think a marriage is a wonderful thing. This is the thought after 18 years of marriage. I am very sure Bill and Melinda Gates have decided that this is the next phase. I wish them all the best and I am very sure they would continue to do more for the people with their wealth.
