We should treat this piece of news as something positive for the northern region instead of thinking of one ‘killing’ the other. Whether the arrivals (passengers or cargoes) were via Kulim or even Bayan Lepas, what’s not to rejoice if the investments could spur both states instead of just one? Of course, this would also depend on how the two states will work with one another as partners instead of competitors yeah.
I am saying this because it does seem that the news of an airport in Kulim is very much confirmed. In fact Kedah’s Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has even announced his hope that the new airport will be OPERATIONAL in 2024. By the way, it’s 2020 now which meant that within less than 4 years, we should expect the Kulim International Airport (KXP) to be welcoming planes yeah.

He said, “We hope to have it operational in 2024.” He also emphasised that KXP is needed because the Penang International Airport (PIA) is focused on passengers while the KXP will cater to cargo and logistics. He added, “As of today, many industries are still freighting their goods by road to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.”
Mukrhiz also said that the state government is planning to double the size of Kulim Hi-Tech Park and with this expansion, the park will see exponential growth in investments especially in industries involved with artificial intelligence or robotics. He said, “We hope the investments would not be at the same pace as what we did from 1996 to 2019, which only drew RM31 billion in investments.” Please do refer to the full Article in nst.com.my
By the way, this was what our Finance Minister said recently yeah. “There is no reason for the Penang International Airport (PIA) to fear competition from the proposed Kulim International Airport (KXP) or any other airports for the matter,” Lim Guan Eng told the Penang State Assembly today. He said that each airport, including the PIA has its own strength to compete with other surrounding airports. (click here to read yeah)
