I do hope Penang has big plans for its international airport. Just two days ago, there was a report that Penang may have to decide between two proposals for a new international airport. Both of them will seek to stop the operations of Penang International Airport (PIA) after they are operating. That article is here in thestar.com.my However, after the news broke out, following are all the important VIPs who said that they were unaware of such a proposal or that such a proposal has not yet reached them.
Article in edgeprop.my Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that he would welcome any proposal to develop a new airport in the state or the region. However, has said “However, the state is unaware of the two new airport proposals as reported in The Star today.” He also said, “The Penang government wants to reiterate our earlier position that any new airport proposal must not jeopardise the role and function of the Bayan Lepas International Airport and the future development of the state. The economy of Penang and its people must benefit from any such proposal.”
Article in edgeprop.my here. The Ministry of Transport says it has not received any proposals to build a new airport in Penang, following a news report today stating that two private companies have plans to build one, but in two different locations in the state. It said, “The Ministry of Transport would like to stress that the ministry has never been informed of these proposals, never been involved in any discussions about them, and never received any proposal papers to build the two airports.”
Article in themalaysianinsight.com Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that the ministry has not received any proposals for the development of two airports on mainland Penang. He said that Finance and Transport Ministry as well as state governments of Penang and Kedah is also unaware of such a proposal. He said, “To date, The Star report has only sowed confusion among the communications and transport industry because they (the paper) failed to disclose who had attended the briefing or accepted the recommendations.”
Article in thestar.com.my here. Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said that it is the government’s job to assess proposals to build ports and airports from the private sector. He said, “I don’t know whether the proposals are right or not. Nowadays, many people want to construct airports and ports but we have to gauge the potential first. I have only read about it in the newspaper.”
Okay, at the moment, every one seems to be unaware of such proposals. Perhaps we wait a little while more and we will know if there are fire behind the smoke screen. What’s clear is that no one has threatened to sue The Star for reporting such a news yet. The saga of KXP (Kulim International Airport) and PIA (Penang International Airport) and now two more potential proposals for a totally new international airport in Penang is said to be on the way. Happy following.
