I, Robot was a movie which made me wonder what happens when the Artificial Intelligence (A.I) which is developed by us turns rogue. Please watch the movie if you have yet to. View the official trailer below:

In real life, A.I is playing an ever more important role in our lives. From driverless car which could avoid collisions with another vehicle and supposed to replace the need for drivers in the near future to an honorary citizenship from Saudi Arabia to a robot named Sophia which could display emotions and carry conversations like a normal human being (click here to read) We really do love A.I don’t we? Well, Kuala Lumpur will become a smart city by 2020 as it will be using Alibaba Cloud’s artificial intelligence programme and big data analytics.

Article in thestar.com.my here. Kuala Lumpur is likely to become a smart city by next year which will use Alibaba Cloud’s artifical intelligence programme and big data analytics. Alibaba Cloud Malaysia general manager Kenny Tan said the pilot study carried out in Kuala Lumpur showed that 12% of travel time would be reduced in traffic by Malaysians.

He said at least 10 minutes would be saved in traffic jams and the impact will be seen by Malaysians in the near future. Should the Kuala Lumpur City Council give its final approval for the implementation, Tan said real time traffic prediction solutions would be done in stages as there are around 600 traffic junctions in Kuala Lumpur.

Tan said announcements are most likely to be made next month about the approval of the authorities and the implementation of the smart city initiative. Moreover, he expected the group to continue its investments in Malaysia to boost the growth potential of locals in the technology world. In the next three to five years, he believed that companies would leverage and bank on technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data analytics.   Article in thestar.com.my here.

What this says is that A.I will be the ones controlling the traffic junctions in Kuala Lumpur and due to this, it’s able to ensure smooth traffic flow because it’s able to adjust according to situations. So, on a day where the traffic flow becomes too heavy, the traffic lights will take over the role of the traffic policemen with a much higher accuracy as it could calculate its results and not relying on just eyesight and years of experience. Anyway, it will be really interesting to see how the A.I affects the results from Waze and Google Map. Both Waze or Google Map could also be considered a form of A.I since these days, its predictions on arrival time is pretty accurate already. Well, let’s enjoy staying in a smart city yeah.
