I was based in Penang for 15 years after my graduation. 1998 – 2013. I think it’s statistically safe to say that Penang is an advanced state in Malaysia and it has grown by leaps and bounds from the time when the first bridge was built followed by the industrialisation of the state as the silicon valley of Malaysia and these days, a diversified economy including even tourism due to its UNESCO Heritage City status. Penang International Airport is already operating at full capacity and there are now expansion plans. Earlier article here. In 2015, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) received its city council status. Its current mayor is Dato’ Ar. Yew Tung Seang. He will soon have a counterpart to work with because Seberang Prai Municipal Council has been awarded city council status.
Article in thestar.com.my Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the Seberang Jaya municipal council will be elevated to city status. She said, “Last week, it was decided in Cabinet and it would probably be announced after Raya.” When asked if the MPSP president (Datuk Rozali Mohamud) would be made the mayor, Zuraida said she would leave it to the Public Service Department to decide. The application to elevate the MPSP to a city council began in July 2018 as the MPSP as a local authority had fulfilled all criteria, such as a population exceeding 500,000 and a revenue of RM100mil. Seberang Prai covers an administration area of 747.8sq km area, the largest municipality in the country with a population of 946,200. Article in thestar.com.my
Okay, now Penang is full of city councils. 🙂 It should now be SPCC (Seberang Prai City Council) I think. Actually, the status is not just a status. Now, the task of making Seberang Prai an even more vibrant city would fall on the mayor’s initiatives as well as foresight as well. I can safely tell you that a good mayor will be a great driving force in making the city a liveable one. Perhaps a start by looking at more public recreation facilities and the maintenance of them. At the moment, the position of mayor is still not up for election. It’s usually appointed. Well, who knows in the future that all mayors of city councils in Malaysia will be elected instead? Happy following and all the best yeah Seberang Prai city!
