There’s a reason why Singapore is such a FINE city. The authorities made sure if you owe them money (due to fines), they will get back their money. Thus, there’s really no point to delay or default because sooner rather than later, they will find the defaulter and the defaulter will have to pay. Here in Malaysia, we are not that efficient and that’s one reason why people do not pay their fines. Some even announced that they will pay when a huge discount is given. Else, they could wait because it may be years later… before any concrete action is taken. Well, with regards to the unpaid assessments, it does seem that the authorities are now more serious. Let’s hope they keep it this way.
Article in edgeprop.my here. Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) will be trying to recover around RM10.7 million in assessments. They will visit these defaulters at their homes. In fact, during their visit, some of the occupants of a condominium and some tenants paid their arrears of two years right away. A total of 16 units owned by those owing RM38,000 in overdue taxes were called by MPAJ enforcement officers. Azmizam Abdul Jalil of MPAJ said the owners were given two reminders to settle their payments before the deadline. Then, a red notice will be issued by hand to the taxpayers. Lastly, the officers would have to seize the taxpayers’ assets, depending on the amount owned. Within a week, the items will be auctioned if the owners do not pay their arrears and claim their belongings. Article in edgeprop.my here.
Please look at the last two sentences yeah. “Officers will SEIZE the taxpayers’ assets’ and “items will be auctioned off in a week” I think this is already provided for legally, thus it should not just be MPAJ who is diligently conducting these visits. I really wish for a better Malaysia where the money collected will be put to good use by the council but that’s another story. What should happen now is an efficient collection system where people must realise that they should pay or they will get visits very soon. Beyond just municipal councils however, there are many other FINES which we must pay too. Else they should FIND us. Happy hiding… I meant paying.
