For Johor and Singapore, the catalyst to the growth to both sides will be connectivities. the bridge can wait lah. That’s only for cars unless we intend for Malaysians and Singaporeans to walk over the bridge to either side everyday? RTS is such a catalyst, for people. Capacity of 10,000 passengers per direction per hour sounds very good to me. Plus, when it’s at full capacity, adding additional cars to the existing rail will be far easier than building new rail lines. RTS is going to be suspended as per announced yesterday jointly by both sides. Actually, it’s not considered a good news except that at least we now have transparency on what’s really happening to the RTS JB – SG link which is already overdue.
Article in straitstimes.com.sg here. There’s now an agreement to effect a suspension of the RTS. In a press conference alongside his Malaysian counterpart Anthony Loke at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Mr Khaw noted that Malaysia has requested a six-month suspension of the RTS Link so it can review key parameters of the project. He said, “We will approach this issue as we did for the suspension of the HSR project, with goodwill and reasonable accommodation.” Anthony also confirmed that there would be costs involved for the suspension but this will be decided after a review. The article also touched upon the airspace over southern Johor as well. For full reading: Article in straitstimes.com.sg here.
We know for sure that the RTS will now not be starting on 31 Dec 2024. Well, it has to wait until after the supplementary agreement for the suspension is drafted and signed, first. Somehow, I believe both sides would have to understand that we are not competing against one another. We are competing against the world. Making the mistake of trying to outdo one another meant that we are forgetting that both are trading nations and both depend on the world but both would have to depend on the competitiveness of one another so that both are much more competitive. Hopefully, RTS will be treated with more urgency because this is not a want, it is a necessity for the growth of JB and SG. Happy following.
