How much tourism money could one plane bring in when it lands in an airport in Malaysia? Assuming it’s an Air Asia X version of Airbus A330-300. It carries a total of 377 guests if it’s full. We assume there’s just 300 tourists. All of them stay in Malaysia for just 4 nights. Everyday they spend just RM300 in total for hotel, food, travelling and gifts. That’s 300 x 4 nights x RM300 each = RM360,000. Multiplier effect of 4 and that’s RM1.44 million just from ONE flight. Okay, not all flights are full. Not all tourists could spend RM300 per day but I hope everyone gets the idea why we need to have connectivity to the world. That’s one reason Changi International Airport spares no effort in making its airport the best in the world… First impression counts.

Earlier article here about Kulim’s potential international airport and Penang’s International Airport (PIA): KXP and PIA should be complementary. Perhaps then it was uncertain if the project will take off because less than a week ago, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the decision for KXP was still pending. It is now officially launched. Article in thestar.com.my here. The government has announced seven mega projects costing over RM3 billion for Kedah. Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali announced that the projects are the Kulim International Airport (KXP); a manufacturing industries and logistics hub in Sidam near Kulim; two phases of the Northern Corridor highway project over a 70km stretch; a digital library in Alor Setar; a petrochemical industrial park in Gurun and the Kasih Ibu Darul Aman (Kida) programme. For the two phases of the Northern Corridor Highway, the first phase is from Bandar Baharu (Kulim) to Sungai Petani and the second phase from Bandar Baharu to the Sultan Abdul Halim Bridge in Penang. Total cost for this would be RM1.7billion. Article in thestar.com.my here.

It’s very important for PIA to get immediate and serious attention because if I am a tourist and I arrive into Penang for the first time and I had to queue 20 minutes just to get into the toilets because there’s too many arrivals, I will be telling the world about it… As for KXP, let’s just wait for more announcements on how it will have to be complementary to the PIA. Let’s note that these two airports will be only 1 hour apart from one another and they must not be ‘killing’ one another by offering airlines incentives which does not make sense in the future just to attract more flights to fly into Malaysia (yes, same country…). Perhaps one just need to be specialised. Perhaps… Happy following.
